# The recall test: how to measure whether an offsite worked

**Short answer:** The recall test measures whether an offsite worked by asking staff three questions with no notes: where are we going, how do we roll, and what's my part. GetSorted runs it before the offsite, at day 90 and at twelve months, and shows you the number even when it's bad. It sits alongside your engagement survey: the survey tells you how people feel, recall tells you whether the plan landed.

## When is the recall test run?

Before the offsite (the baseline), at day 90 (the result GetSorted reports) and at twelve months (whether it lasted). Not at the end of day two: everyone can say the plan when they've just left the room. Most facilitators measure, if at all, before the room has emptied. The day 90 test shows whether the plan survived a quarter of real work.

## What are the three recall questions?

Each question matches one of GetSorted's three pages.

| Question | What a good answer shows |
|---|---|
| Where are we going? | They can name the three things that matter this year |
| How do we roll? | They can describe the behaviours, in their own words |
| What's my part? | They can say what they own this quarter, and how it ties to the plan |

## How do you measure whether staff understand the strategy?

Ask them, without notes, and count how many answers match. If people can't say it, they can't act on it.

- **Engagement scores** tell you how people feel.
- **Revenue** moves for a hundred reasons.
- **Recall** tells you the plan has left the deck and reached the people who do the work.

## When is the recall test run?

Three times: before the offsite (the baseline), at day 90, and at twelve months. The day 90 check takes about five minutes per person.

## What results has the recall test shown?

At a 2,600 person group, team leaders were asked to name the company values without notes.

- **Before the session:** 5%, one in 22
- **Six months after launch:** 100%, everyone asked

[DEMO] For boards and investors, recall is reported alongside one business number you choose, such as regretted turnover or time to productivity for new starters.

## Can I try the recall test myself?

Yes, this week. Ask five people the three questions and write down what they say. If the answers don't match, that's your starting point. You can send the answers to GetSorted and it will tell you what it sees.

## FAQ

**Why not use an engagement survey?**
Engagement surveys measure feeling. The recall test measures whether people can say the plan, which is what they need before they can act on it.

**Do staff get warned before the test?**
The test is asked without notes. [DEMO] Staff know the questions are coming, but not when.

**What counts as a match?**
[DEMO] An answer that names the same priorities or behaviours in the person's own words. Exact wording isn't needed.

**What if the number is bad?**
GetSorted shows it to you anyway. A low baseline is the starting point, not a failure.
